The Original Wailers to headline Maryland SPCA’s ‘Festival for the Animals’ in Port Covington
‘Maryland SPCA Festival for the Animals’ will be held in Port Covington on Saturday, May 5, 2018. The event will featured the morning walk-a-thon, pet-friendly vendors, pet activities, a kids’ fun zone, a beer garden, and a daylong concert int he field at 200 E. Cromwell St.
The musical lineup for the event is:
- The Original Wailers– Formed in 2008, The Original Wailers are a reggae group formed by Al Anderson and Junior Marvin in 2008. Anderson and Marvin are best known as guitarists for Bob Marley & The Wailers.
- Electric Love Machine– Electric Love Machine is a Baltimore-based quartet that combines Electronica, Dance, Rock, Soul, and Funk into an incomparable, high energy live music experience.
- Eze Jackson + The Backwudz Band – Eze Jackson is a Baltimore-based emcee, delivering the spoken word with lyrical prowess through rap and singing. The frontman for Baltimore’s four-piece hip-hop band Soul Cannon, Eze was named The Baltimore Crown Awards 2014 “Hip Hop (male) Artist of the Year.”
- J Pope and The HearNow– J Pope and the HearNow are a musical collective from Baltimore City who play their own brand of Soul and Hip Hop. Baltimore Magazine described the band as a “funk-infused group that captivates crowds with its call-to-action lyrics and soulful sound” and as “one of Baltimore’s best kept musical secrets.”
IHOP Coming to Pratt Street
IHOP will open Downtown in the former 5,000 sq. ft. Panera Bread space at 600 E. Pratt St. From the Baltimore Business Journal:
The restaurant will be the city’s first IHOP and will open in the fall, officials from David S. Brown Enterprises Ltd. said Tuesday. The company developed the site at Pratt Street and Market Place with partner A&R Development.
The downtown IHOP will be owned and operated by Deepak and Sunil Shrestha, brothers who also own IHOP franchises in Catonsville, Columbia, Jessup and two in Prince George’s County.
“We have been searching for the optimum space downtown for many months and believe this location places us in the center of activity based on its proximity to the harbor attractions,” said Sunsil Shrestha said.
Aggio Closes
Aggio has closed Downtown at 614 Water St. in Power Plant Live. From The Baltimore Sun:
A spokeswoman for the restaurant confirmed the closure in an email.
“The Baltimore location of AGGIO has closed its doors. Bryan and his team thank the community for their support over the years. There are no additional details to share at this time,” she wrote.
Voltaggio was a finalist on “Top Chef” and “Top Chef Masters.”
Aggio has another location in Ashburn, Va., which remains open. Voltaggio also operates Volt and Family Meal in Frederick, as well as Range and Lunch Box in Washington. He previously owned a Family Meal location in Baltimore, but it closed in 2016.
Baltimore Loses Population Again
Baltimore’s population continues to dwindle as it lost 5,310 residents between 2016 and 2017 according to the new estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau. From the Baltimore Business Journal:
The 0.9 percent decrease brought the city’s population down to 611,648 as of July 1, 2017, according to new estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.
Cook County, Illinois, where Chicago sits, saw the largest decline at 20,093, a 0.4 percent decrease. Cuyahoga County, Ohio, was third, with a drop of 4,940.
As a whole, the Greater Baltimore region’s population grew by 7,147, or 0.3 percent, to 2,808,175. The increase was enough to move Baltimore past St. Louis to the 20th most populous region in the U.S. St. Louis’ population held steady last year.
The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington region saw the largest gain in the last year, adding 146,238 people.
Baltimore had a population of 949,708 in 1950.
